The picture above shows a photo in cabinet card format. There is no inscription on the card. Therefore we do not know where or when this pictures was taken. The early 1870s are possible. We see a street scene: a busy street with horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians, multi-storey buildings on both sides (although the left side is difficult to make out. You only see a house border). This makes us think that this picture was taken in one of the big north European or north American Cities. We would be interested to hear different opinions about this picture. Maybe one day we will be able to find an answer where this photo was taken.
Please, take a look on the close-ups and details and tell us your ideas!

Well we did not have to wait long for an answer: It is Paris, Boulevard de Sebastopol in direction to Gare de L'Est. Read more here.

Some comments we received previously:
-Fascinating image. I have no way of knowing, but it does not look American to me. I would guess that it was Continental. The buildings have a French or perhaps Belgian look to me. But I have no expertise on architecture. One rather strange thing from my point of view is what happened to the left side of the picture. I think it strange that that only one side of the street is developed. Could it be an ocean front? Or perhaps it is a very wide avenue.

-I have no idea where this picture was taken, but the street seems to be unpaved - i.e. dirt with ruts and ridges. Is the largest horse-drawn vehicle like a van or bus for carrying a number of people? Is there luggage piled on the top? It's hard to be sure but the left side of the street seems to have no high buildings. Maybe near a park or a beach?

-What a great photo... Seems to have the tall hats of the 1860s but cabinet cards were at earliest 1870s, so perhaps c.1874 - a guess. No idea where.

The child above was a girl called Wilhelme. She looks to be about 8 years old. What is so amazing about this picture is that she as a girl is wearing trousers. A very unusual sight in the the first half of the 1870s. Our only idea so far is that once she played a boy's role in a theater. But we are not sure. The pictures was taken in Wien by the photographers Raentz & Peierl. The backview identifies her and her birthdate. So she was born on December 12th, 1865. We have a problem with deciphering her family name. We did some research and used different spelling variants: Bennlen, Bennan, Rennlen, Rennan. To no avail. We are eager to learn more about Wilhelmine. Maybe she was an actress? Maybe you have an idea how to spell her family name?
In case anyone knows more about Wilhelmine, please tell us.

The photo above was taken by the Maull & Co Photographers, London, UK. The back view shows three locations for studio branches: 62, Cheapside; Travistock House, Fulham Road; 187A, Piccadilly W. The company used the the name Maull & Co between 1873-1878. But the picture does look older, perhaps 1860s style. Maybe this picture was a copy of an earlier photo. On the back view there is an inscription of the negative number. Henry Maull, founder of the company, was a noted photographer of celebrities. We would love to know if the gentleman shown may have been a celebrity of the time. The way he is posing does look impressive.
